Max Paynewas a notable member and former Chairman of the Trustees of the Scientific and Medical Network (SMN), an interdisciplinary forum founded in 1977 that explores the frontiers of science, consciousness, and spirituality, challenging scientific materialism through public conferences, lectures, discussions, and publications.
Following war service, Payne studied chemistry and philosophy and went on to spend his academic career lecturing in philosophy at Sheffield Hallam University. He was a co-editor of the 1999 bookWider Horizons: Explorations in Science and Human Experienceand co-author ofA Forgotten Truth: A Spiritual Vision for Modern Man.
In retirement, Payne remained an active figure within the SMN, regularly running the Sheffield Group, serving as Master of Ceremonies at the Network’s Annual Gatherings, and leading its Trustees as Chairman.
