In Life Before Life, psychologist Helen Wambach, PhD, documents cases from 750 past-life group hypnotherapy sessions. In an effort to rule out false memories, fantasies and wishful thinking, Wambach devised a protocol where she chose time-specific periods in the past and asked respondents where they were and what they were doing during that time. As expected, some respondents reported experiences while others reported nothing, prompting the question, did they report nothing because they were between lives?
Mundane questions were asked such as:
“What types of utensils are being used?”
“Describe weaving techniques that are being used.”
“What foodstuffs are commonly in use during this time?”
“What color is the brickwork of the houses?”
The respondents may or may not have known the answers in their waking state but with investigation they could later be verified as fact or fiction.
Wambach reasoned that if she asked 400 subjects a question about a specific time and place and received a sizable percentage of similar answers from subjects who at least consciously weren’t aware of the information they were reporting, that was something worth investigating further.
“Bigger” questions were asked such as:
“Did you choose to be born?”
“Why did you choose the twentieth century?”
“Have you chosen your sex for the coming lifetime?”
“Have you known your mother-to-be in a past life?”
“When does your soul enter the fetus?”
The bigger questions, while intriguing, were not as evidential as the mundane questions, but collectively the data obtained makes for fascinating and compelling reading for anyone pondering the question of reincarnation.
About the author
Helen Louise Wambach, PhD, nee Stewart (18 August 1925 Glen Ellen, Illinois – 18 August 1985 Larkspur, California).
She graduated from University of Chicago during WW II and did graduate studies in psychology at Louisiana State University, working with shell-shocked veterans. She later taught psychology at John F. Kennedy University, California.
In the 1980s Helen launched a group home for troubled teenage girls in New Jersey. Her interest in the paranormal overtook her professional life following the spate of American political assassinations and the death of her only brother. A déjà vu encounter in New Hope, PA finally set her on her path to research and writing on reincarnation.
Her two books, Reliving Past Lives and Life Before Life document the results of her group hypnotherapy sessions into alleged past lives. She co-authored a third book, Dreams of the Future, with historian Chet Snow that was published shortly after her death.
